Read real books in the language you are learning. And understand every part of them. That is what duoBooks is for. Tap any word or sentence, and the translation appears right on the page. It is a precise, context-aware translation. So you keep reading instead of stopping to look things up. Start with a classic, a short story for beginners, or a book you bring yourself. You learn the language as you read, one page at a time.
duoBooks is a book reader with tools to help you learn from what you read. Tap any sentence, or double-tap a single word. duoBooks looks at the text around the word you want to translate. So you get the translation that fits this sentence. The app understands idioms and phrasal verbs, not a word-by-word guess. There is a short grammar note and example sentences too. The words you save go into a personal dictionary. Each word is saved with the sentence where you found it. It also comes with phonetics, synonyms, and definitions. A spaced-repetition system turns these words into flashcards. This helps you keep them in your memory. Every word and sentence can also be read aloud. Text-to-speech works in 47 languages.
The built-in library has more than 3000 books and short stories. Most of them are in English. Some short stories are written just for beginners. You can also import your own EPUB and FB2 files. You read them with the same context-aware translation. The app interface is available in more than 40 languages. duoBooks also works on Android-based e-ink readers, such as BOOX and PocketBook. On these devices it switches to a special e-ink mode by itself.
Reading is one of the most natural ways to learn a language. You meet real words in real context, at your own pace. And you read stories you care about. This is very different from drilling flashcards or memorizing grammar tables. Context is also how words get their meaning. The same word can mean different things in different sentences. And idioms and phrasal verbs mean nothing when you split them apart. One thing usually stops people: they stop to look up words. You reach for a dictionary every second sentence, and you lose the story. duoBooks fixes this. A context-aware translation is only one tap away. So you stay in the story while you learn the language.
duoBooks is for anyone who would rather learn a language from a good story than from exercises. Maybe you have tried the language apps and want something you enjoy. Maybe you have always wanted to read a favorite novel in its original language. And to understand every line. duoBooks is also for students and travelers. It is for people moving to a new country, who learn the language fastest by reading it. And it is for book lovers on e-ink, who get a reading mode made for their device. Have real books in another language ever felt too hard? duoBooks is built to change that.
duoBooks is available for iPhone and iPad on the App Store. It is also available for Android phones, tablets, and e-ink readers on Google Play. Want to know how it works? See the overview or the frequently asked questions.
